1. HRANA's record. The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) published The Crimson Winter on 27 February 2026. We extracted the report's deceased appendix, 4,555 entries across four sub-sections (deceased children, killed protester-citizens, non-participating civilians, and government fatalities), directly from the published PDF, preserving each entry's name, city, province, date, and HRANA's own verification status as printed. The detainee appendix and aggregate unidentified-death counts were not included; the remaining entries include some duplicate, partial-identity, and one-to-many rows, so they correspond to fewer distinct individuals. 2. The IranMassacre.net archive. As of 19 June 2026, this archive had documented 3,071 victims from public social media posts through automated collection, AI-assisted extraction, and human editorial review. The methodology and limitations are described on our about page.

We aligned every name in HRANA's deceased record to our independently documented profiles using the same layered name-matching approach described in the government cross-reference report: names are normalized to a standard Farsi form, compared in progressively broader passes, and uncertain candidates are reviewed by an operator.

Two things are specific to this source. First, HRANA's record was a published PDF, parsed verbatim with no normalization at the extraction stage. Second, some entries give only a first name, or a first name with an unknown surname; where we created a profile from such an entry it is marked as a partial identity. A small number of one-to-many matches (where a single HRANA entry could correspond to more than one of our profiles) are also held back from display pending review.

The figures in this report should be read as a documented minimum, not a comprehensive count of those killed.

On our data. This archive draws from social media posts that surfaced during and after a near-total internet blackout; people whose deaths were never posted are not represented. Our collection relies on automated extraction and AI-assisted processing with human editorial review, and no individual record has been independently verified. The overlap with HRANA's independent documentation lends corroboration to part of our data, but does not verify the remaining records.

On HRANA's data. HRANA is an independent human-rights documentation effort, and its figures are its own. Because we extracted their record automatically from a published PDF, extraction artifacts are possible; we preserved names and fields as printed rather than correcting them. Differences between the two records reflect the different ways each was gathered, not a judgment on either.
