Why This Archive

We built this archive because scattered social media posts are not a permanent record. Platforms remove content. Accounts get suspended. Links break. Families searching for information about their loved ones face a fragmented landscape of unstructured data across dozens of sources.

This archive collects those scattered reports into a single, structured, publicly accessible record. Not to verify their accuracy, which would require resources and access we do not have, but to preserve what families, witnesses, and citizen journalists have shared, so that no reported name disappears.

How It Works

Leads (social media posts that mention victims by name) are identified by human curators and automated tools. The system then collects and archives the source material, including text, images, and videos. AI-assisted tools extract structured information: names, locations, reported status, and other details. Each record links back to its original source.

All information on this site is reported, not verified. Human editorial passes have been applied for data cleanup (removing duplicates, correcting misspellings, normalizing formatting), but no individual record has been independently verified. Information may be incomplete or inaccurate. The archive presents what was publicly shared.

The Event

On 28 December 2025, protests erupted across Iran following a sharp collapse of the national currency. What began as economic grievances, with shopkeepers closing their stalls in Tehran's Grand Bazaar, quickly escalated into the largest nationwide demonstrations since the 1979 revolution, spreading to all 31 provinces [1]. Protesters called for human rights, dignity, and the downfall of the Islamic Republic system [1].

On 8 and 9 January 2026, Iranian security forces carried out mass killings of protesters and bystanders on an unprecedented scale [1][2]. Footage and witness testimony reviewed by Human Rights Watch document security forces firing rifles and shotguns at protesters, frequently targeting heads and torsos [1]. On 8 January, authorities imposed a near-total internet and telecommunications blackout, cutting off over 90 million people from the outside world [2][3].

The Scale

Reported death tolls vary widely. The Iranian government placed the toll at 3,117 and published a list of 2,986 names, which human rights organizations described as rushed, incomplete, and largely unverifiable [5][6]. Independent organizations have reported significantly higher figures: Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO) documented at least 3,428 protester deaths by 14 January, noting that Ministry of Health sources registered at least 3,379 protester deaths between 8 and 12 January alone [4]. By 1 February, HRANA's documented count reached 6,842, with an additional 11,280 cases under review [5]. The UN Special Rapporteur on Iran stated that at least 5,000 people had been killed [2].

Human Rights Watch documented evidence of mass killings across at least eight provinces, including footage from Tehran's Kahrizak morgue showing at least 400 bodies, and witness accounts from Behesht-e Zahra cemetery describing 1,500 to 2,000 bodies in its halls [1]. Over 53,000 people have reportedly been arrested, including hundreds of children [2]. The UN Human Rights Council convened a special session and extended the mandate of its Fact-Finding Mission on Iran to investigate these events [7].

The Information Crisis

The full scale of the killings remains difficult to establish. The internet blackout that began on 8 January lasted over 20 days [3]. Although partially relaxed on 28 January, access was restored only through a heavily filtered whitelist system. On 28 February, connectivity was cut to near-zero again.

Families of those killed report being pressured into silence: compelled to sign false cause-of-death statements, denied timely access to remains, and threatened against holding public funerals [8]. Security forces confiscated mobile phones, seized footage from private security cameras, and arrested medical staff for treating the wounded [1][2]. No independent media organizations or investigators have access to the country.

Despite these restrictions, fragments of information have emerged. Families who connected through satellite internet or intermittent access posted about their loved ones on social media: a name on one platform, a photo on another, a plea for information elsewhere. Citizen journalists shared footage from morgues and cemeteries [1]. But this information is scattered across platforms, in different languages, and at constant risk of removal. No comprehensive public record exists.
